I had hoped to achieve many things by spending one year in France and now, here we are—almost on the other side. We’re older, we’re wiser. Most importantly, we’ve seen more of the French countryside than I ever thought I would in one lifetime. I mean, fine. We’re not much more fluent in French than the day we moved in. I never did learn how to make croissants from scratch. And yes, fine, the metric system continues to stump me in both the kitchen and on the road. But we made it. six lessons i’ve learned as an english speaking expat

Well, bonjour and hello! First thing’s first, let’s get this out of the way right off the bat: my French is très rusty. I tried! I got a tutor and was going to class twice a week and being a good little Francophile, and yet, I am still only able to speak in the present. WTF is with passé composé, huh? Then, we went on all these trips to English-speaking places and my accent just never got better and Frenchies continue to switch to English almost automatically, or WORSE, they carry on in French while I silently panic and my brain just shuts down. Did you know that it has been one full month + four days since the hubs and the pug and I boarded a flight to France?
