going for the gold: our top three travel memories

the-romantic-the-winoThough we just spent the better part of the last two weeks chiding ourselves for failing at Olympic careers we never even knew we wanted, we have good news! We’ve found a way to console ourselves! And it’s not wine!

What, you ask, can make us feel better about the fact that we weren’t born to be Missy Franklin and McKayla Maroney? WELL, we’ve been asked to be a part of a blogger rally. Take that, Gabby Douglas.

Thanks to a campaign created by Lowcostholidays.com, travel bloggers from around the interwebs are sharing their top three travel moments and ranking them by Gold, Silver, and Bronze. We were invited to join Team Blue, which is exciting because:

1. Our fellow bloggers on Team Blue are basically the Michael Phelpses and Usain Bolts of travel blogging.

and

2. Our “coach” is Christina Hegele of Jandal Road.

Told you it was exciting. Nicole & Cameron of The Traveling Canucks (and past Jetsetters!) have passed the blogging baton to us, and so, here we are. To make it (a little) easier on ourselves, we decided to narrow down our options and make our choices based on trips we’ve taken together.

It was either this or apply to be coxswains in the 2016 Summer Olympics, and this is safer for everyone. Trust.

BRONZE
The day we found platform 9 and 3/4

When the romantic & the hubs got engaged in Greece, it was only appropriate for the wino to meet them during their layover in London to celebrate, Lazy Travelers style. This meant champagne, which led to pub hopping, which naturally, led to a serious hunt for anything Harry Potter related. When we finally made it to Kings Cross Station and took off running for Platform 9 and 3/4, we were completely devastated to find out we couldn’t make it through the brick wall. THANKFULLY, the hubs was there to remind us that as we were in our 20’s, we were too old to be at Hogwarts anyway and THAT was why we couldn’t pass through. Thank goodness for rational thought.

SILVER
The Paddy’s Day we spent in Dublin

When the wino lived in Dublin as a graduate student, the romantic flew thousands of miles to be by her side…and celebrate Paddy’s Day. Since we knew it was unlikely we’d ever get another chance to celebrate our favorite holiday in the land of our ancestors, we took full advantage of the day. It started out innocently enough, attending the parade and bouncing around to a few of the wino’s favorite pubs. Then shit got weird. Like, real weird.

We made friends

We took shots of Baby Guinnesses (with our pinkies out, apparently?)

And then this happened.

The time we drove across Ireland

Pre-Paddy’s day madness, we decided to go a little out of our comfort zone. Since our typical vacation itineraries include beaucoup du vin and very little daredevil-like adventures, choosing to drive across Ireland together became our most fantastic travel memory. Though both of us were embarrassingly underqualified to take this trip (let’s just say one of us had an expired license and the other hadn’t driven since high school), we made it all the way from Dublin to Dingle AND we took on the treacherous Slea Head Loop around the Dingle peninsula. We laughed, we cried, and we thankfully did not crash.

NOW, it’s our turn to pass the baton! It’s all yours, Jan of Budget Travel Talk!

Keep an eye out on Twitter for the hashtags #BloggerRelay & #TeamBLUE if you want to follow along at home. If you want to PLAY, let us know and we can talk to coach about letting you join the team. We can’t promise we won’t haze you first, though.

xo!

the romantic & the wino

The Lazy Travelers are two transatlantic best friends who have mastered the art of exploring a new city. Though Ashley is based in London and Carolyn is in Philadelphia, we'll use any excuse to reunite around the world. We’re professional bar hoppers, pub crawlers, and food testers, and you’ll never see us zipping around, checking things off a list of “must-sees.”
