jetsetters: hanne, aka Hellvik Hanne

Another day, another fellow traveler! Meet Hanne, aka Hellvik Hanne. She’s a Norwegian wanderluster who has visited over 50 countries and counting! In addition to her personal travel, she’s also devoted serious time abroad to various development projects. Additionally, Hanne founded a “Yo voy a Ti” chapter in Uganda, an NGO that works with at risk children and youth. She’s kind of awesome, and she’s this week’s jetsetter.

Ever been (or thought you’ve been) in imminent danger while traveling?: I lived a half year in an armed conflict area named Jos in Nigeria. There were some bombs and killings when I was there, making me a bit scared especially when I was close and heard the explosions.

Worst hotel/hostel experience: That must be on my travel to the Iguazu falls. My husband and I went in bus trough Paraguay. We did not have much money and stayed in the cheapest places we could find. In one of them it was a lot of blood on the walls. Furthermore, it was so dirty, with many bugs. Furthermore, they advised us to not go outside after dark (7-8 PM), due to that the area was so dangerous.

Favorite “I can’t believe I’m doing this” moment: When I was alone in Hong Kong without any money. One credit card was stolen and the other one stopped working, so I did not have any other option than to leave the hostel after almost one week without paying.

Any exciting trips coming up?: My next big trip will be to Mexico, Belize and Honduras. That will be in June. I can’t wait!

Favorite tourist attraction: Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. This is the biggest salt desert in the world, and truly beautiful.
