a few of my favorite things: salzburg edition

    December 15, 2011 /

You know what has always puzzled me? Why “Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music is considered Christmas music. Correct me if I’m wrong, but there isn’t one mention of Christmas in that movie. And I doubt that I’m wrong, because I’ve watched The Sound of Music upwards of 200 times. Maybe its the mention of crisp apple struedel. That seems somewhat holiday-ish. Doorbells and sleigh bells, sure, but schnitzel with noodle? I’m just not buying it. It took an actual winter trip to Salzburg, Austria for me to see why the setting of The Sound of Music invokes the image of…

    jetsetters: @2travelaholics – part one

    December 14, 2011 /

That’s right, travelers. We have a two-part jetsetters cliffhanger happening this week. It’s getting serious around here. This week’s jetsetter is the mrs. half of the 2travelaholics, and we’re particularly jealous of this traveling duo. In the midst of planning for their Round The World trip departing this coming June, we’re excited to follow along on twitter and their blog as they map out their next adventure. Without further ado… Mrs. Travelaholic: Favorite Place: Vancouver. I went there a lot growing up and really love the city and its people. More importantly, favorite meal: Without a doubt: sushi. I could…

how to spend two days in paris?

    December 13, 2011 /

BEST NEWS! We’re just under the two month mark for our Paris trip! 51 days, in fact (merci beaucoup, TripIt). When hubs told me we were going to Paris, the main idea was that we’d spend a weekend in Paris, exploring the city and not feeling any pressure since we’d already hit all the tourist spots on our first visit in 2009. A weekend of red wine and macarons and the Seine and maybe oh so hopefully: a little bit of snow on the Eiffel Tower? Sold. Except this morning on the subway, while cursing my seat neighbor for wearing…

weekend warriors // washington, dc must-sees

    December 12, 2011 /

On Saturday night, I got a glimpse of the Washington monument for the first time since I returned to Washington, DC. Gotta admit, I got a few butterflies in my tum. I love love LOVE DC. After four years here in college, and many subsequent weekend trips back, it’s one of my top faves. But with all my other travels and the craziness that’s been my life since I graduated, I kind of lost sight of how great of a city it really is. Seeing the Washington monument was my first big sigh of relief since my move, but here…

    christmas in new york

    December 9, 2011 /

Seven years in, and I’m realizing that New York and I have a full-on emotionally abusive relationship. While walking to the subway after work yesterday, gazing at the lit-up trees and listening to the Christmas carols floating out of the festively decorated shops down by my office, it hit me. I stick it out year after year for one single thing: Christmas in New York. Yes, May in New York is beautiful. And September and early November are the times to visit this city if you’re a tourist (not October, weekends in October are always rainy). But Christmas in New York?…
