photo escape: colmar & the alsace wine route
Somehow, time is very quickly getting away from me. One minute, we were all bundled up in the dead of winter, counting down the seconds until we leave country living behind for bigger & better (read: a city). The next minute, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, the blossoms are blooming, and the French countryside? Well, it isn’t looking so bad. Just before my birthday and right on the cusp of spring, the hubs proposed a little road trip. I’ve been dying to see Colmar since before we even knew we were moving to Fontainebleau, so with the one request that I…

foodie break: in the kitchen with a french master baker
It’s well documented that we are more savory than sweet around these parts. As you might expect, it’s been six solid months of eating beaucoup de baguettes. So recently, when two friends and I had the chance to experience a day of baking with an acclaimed French Master Baker in his kitchen, I had a sudden vision. Me! Covered in flour, befriending all the locals as I handed them the most delicious baguettes in all the land! Yes, well… non. That didn’t happen. Really, listening to Frédéric tell us about life as a Parisian baker cemented what I’ve always known…

photo escape: les calanques & the south of france
I feel a little guilty complaining about this seeing as I’ve never even experienced a Polar Vortex, but I’m really not feeling winter in France. January and February have never been my jam, but the small bit of knowledge that it could snow a few feet and give us all reason to go on lockdown was mildly comforting—and almost always enough to get me through the Seasonal Affective Disorder that comes down on all New Yorkers right around this time of year. New Yorkers are a breed who really enjoy having disorders and neuroses to blame their troubles on, in…

six lessons i’ve learned as an english speaking expat
Well, bonjour and hello! First thing’s first, let’s get this out of the way right off the bat: my French is très rusty. I tried! I got a tutor and was going to class twice a week and being a good little Francophile, and yet, I am still only able to speak in the present. WTF is with passé composé, huh? Then, we went on all these trips to English-speaking places and my accent just never got better and Frenchies continue to switch to English almost automatically, or WORSE, they carry on in French while I silently panic and my…

weekend getaway: 48 hours in washington, dc
Happy Labor Day, my fellow Americans! During our brief stint in the USA this summer, sort our visas was at the top of our list. It was a whole bunch of stress (dear French embassy: WHY ARE YOU SO MEAN?), but one major perk? An unexpected weekend in our nation’s capital: Washington, DC. Alas, the French don’t really acknowledge this holiday. I am ok with it, though, because I hear they celebrate about 45 other public holidays instead. While the hubs is officially back to school, I’m playing catch-up. So, what better time to review our three weeks stateside than…
