    crazy speight’s: touring dunedin’s @speightsbrewery

    July 14, 2013 /

Though Dunedin wasn’t originally in our plan, we made an executive decision to dedicate our afternoon to a tour of the Speight’s Brewery. We had already had our fair share of Speight’s while in New Zealand, so why not learn a bit about the brand? Our guide, Rod, was the ideal guy to take us around—mainly because he kept reminding us how close we were to the free pints at the end of the tour. Unsurprisingly, beer is ingrained in the Kiwi culture, and has been since it was first brewed in New Zealand in 1773. Speight’s itself is over…

spaceship views: touring new zealand’s south island

    July 11, 2013 /

If I could change one thing about our time in New Zealand, it would be a few less days on the North Island and just a few more on the South Island. No, wait. If we’re making wishes, I would first wish that my lens cover didn’t need to be removed with a hacksaw. Then, my favorite sunglasses would not snap in half as my hard-drive committed suicide. Because those were rough days. But after the genie grants those wishes? Then I’d like to go back and readjust our itinerary. As it stands, here’s where our Spaceship took us during…

to the moon & back: seeing new zealand from the back of a spaceship

    July 8, 2013 /

I’m not sure why, but I envisioned renting a campervan in New Zealand from the earliest stages of planning. Something about windy roads and wide open spaces made me think the hubs and I should embrace our inner great outdoorsmen and plop ourselves in various fields over two weeks.  Though I don’t think toting a musical family of twelve cross-country in the back of an Airstream is in our near future (as I envision it to be for all other camper-friendly families), I do think that camping just might have entered our travel lexicon, largely thanks to our Spaceship. We…

kiwi adventures for up & coming adventurists

    July 4, 2013 /

New Zealand tested me more than I expected—and I think, more than we planned. Our kiwi adventures tested my ability to stay awake in the car for hours and hours at a time (failed it). They also tested my ability to make gourmet meals from the back of our Spaceship campervan (failed it), and my ability to exert ridiculous amounts of energy on outdoor activities (nailed it). Wait, nailed it? Cha, yeah. Nailed it. Because I might not have any legs to stand on when it comes to bragging about how active I am, I figured I’d let the hubs…

blackwater rafting: the glowworms of waitomo

    June 30, 2013 /

In between Rotorua and Taupo, we decided to drive just slightly out of the way and hit up Waitomo. Why? Because of these guys: Photo Credit Yeah, glowworms are real. They exist and they light up caves all over New Zealand—most famously, in Waitomo. Though you can go and see the glowworms on your own, we decided to spend the day with The Legendary Black Water Rafting Co. As soon as we arrived, they gathered our motley crew together and handed us all wet suits. Once we were ready, this happened: Yeah, this was going to be one of those days.…
