making a case for driving in costa rica

    August 9, 2012 /

Having successfully driven us through Florence and around the Tuscan countryside, shared the road with wild horses in Vieques, and navigated the streets of Manhattan in a bright yellow Mini Cooper, I fully trust the hubs’s driving skills. But when we told people that we would be driving ourselves from San Jose to Arenal to Quepos and back, I’ll admit– their “Wait, WHAT? You’re DRIVING?” reactions made me question my faith, just a little bit. Worse than the reactions were the first-person horror stories, including one about a scam involving popped tires and literal highway robbery. I think it’s fair to…

driving the dingle peninsula loop & other misadventures

    July 5, 2012 /

When an ocean suddenly separates you from your best friend, you don’t ask questions. You pick a week, book a flight, and meet up on the Emerald Isle for a vacation full of absurdity. Bonus points if that week includes one of your birthdays, an epic roadtrip around the Dingle Peninsula, AND St. Paddy’s Day. There’s no question that we experienced a lifetime’s worth of unexpected adventures (…and misadventures) during our self-planned road trip across Ireland and around the Slea Head Loop on the Dingle Peninsula. Should you plan your own trek across the homeland of our ancestors, we, as…

safety tips for the young metro passenger

    June 5, 2012 /

In the last eight years, I’ve lived in five different cities. This means two things: one, I’m a freaking nomad, and two, I’m very well acquainted with public transportation. Because I haven’t been in possession of a car since the gold station wagon I drove in high school, one of the first things I do in any city is study the public transportation systems. Buses, subways, ferries, trolleys, or whatever it may be, I do my due diligence to learn the ins and outs of getting around, and because of this, I consider myself somewhat of a pro. Until I…

public transportation: the good, the bad, and the ugly

    January 27, 2012 /

I’ve never owned a car. Though I have a valid drivers license and will use it when I have to, when it comes to getting me from here to there, I almost always use public transportation. For this reason, I’ve become highly critical of a city’s public transportation systems, and over the years, I’ve seen some great ones and some horrific ones: The Good New York City, USA Sure, its crowded, it smells like pee, and it may be partially responsible for the bed-bug epidemic, but the New York City Subway is iconic, and I just can’t hate on it.…

baby you can drive my car

    August 12, 2011 /

I hate to drive. Well, that’s a lie. I don’t HATE to drive, but I don’t love it the way some people do, and I certainly would never consider doing it while on a nice, relaxing vacation. I even feel stifled in the passenger seat of a car, and usually fall asleep within about five minutes anyway. I’ve never been the girl who “just needs to go for a drive” and when we’re visiting family in PA, I’m all about letting hubs drive around–who, generally, lies a little further on the “yes” side of the “do you like driving?” line.…
