gettin’ our galway on… but like, sort of

    July 3, 2014 /

First thing’s first, here. Before I dive into our Galway recap, Imma drop a knowledge bomb on you (or possibly not. It is very possible that this is one of those things everyone knows except me, but just go with it). DID YOU KNOW… The people of Galway are called Galwegians??? Yeah, the hubs made this joke, like… 6 times before we got to Galway. Each time, he said it in a “if the plural for goose is geese, why aren’t many moose called meese?!” sort of fashion. “If people from Norway are Norwegian, I bet the people of Galway…

the ashford castle school of falconry

In Western Ireland — in Cong, County Mayo, to be exact — there sits a castle. This isn’t that odd, really, since there are lots of castles in Ireland, but this one is just a bit more special than all the rest. It’s not in ruins, like many, and it hasn’t been renovated and re-opened as a museum, either. Instead, this particular castle has been converted into a 5-star, luxury hotel. But unlike most and much like one particularly famous castle, this one also houses a school. The Ashford Castle School of Falconry. As you drive up the long driveway,…

touring ireland: a day in clifden & connemara

    June 22, 2014 /

You know, as I’ve gone back through my photos from Ireland, I keep realizing just how much we saw… but how little I have to really say about our roadtrip. I want to be helpful! But really, all I have to offer is a crap ton of photos from our week of driving from Dublin to Galway and back again. Sidenote: what is the origin of “crap ton” and all iterations of? I’d google it… but I’m scared. ANYWAY. After our little jaunt around Blarney Castle and the Cliffs of Moher, we crashed hard at The G Hotel in Galway —…

of castles & cliffs: a photo essay

    June 16, 2014 /

Aside from Dublin, it’s a safe bet that the two biggest Ireland musts for most travelers are, arguably, Blarney Castle and the Cliffs of Moher. This is why, after our quick tour of Cork, it was back in the car to hit up these landmarks en route to our three nights in Galway. To be perfectly honest, pre-Blarney Castle, I was 100% take or leave the entire experience. I definitely had no desire to kiss the stone (namely due to articles like this), and pictures of the castle itself didn’t knock my proverbial socks off. Post-Blarney Castle? I’m, like, 60%…

one week on the emerald isle: a beginner’s guide to irish roadtripping

    May 5, 2014 /

Though I am by no means an expert on Ireland — I tip my hat to the wino for that title — I have had the pleasure of roadtripping my way around the country a few times now. And, as is our custom, it’s time for me to report my findings. On our first trip (yes, the one where we famously drove across Ireland without a valid license), the wino & I made our way from Dublin to Dingle and back again, stopping on our return trek in Killarney to explore the Killarney National Park and beg anyone and everyone who…
