    boats, beaches, bars, and ballads

    September 1, 2011 /

Last night as I was snuggling in sweats with my standard post-work glass of wine, I had a sudden realization. My roommates and I hadn’t opened the windows in our non-air conditioned apartment since Hurricane Irene tip-toed past us. Could it be? Is summer really on its way out? I have to admit that I’m not entirely heartbroken that summer is coming to a close. I won’t miss tossing and turning all night sticking to my sheets, and I won’t miss the disgustingly humid subway platforms or the smell of rotting, baking trash lining the sidewalks. I love autumn (duh,…

    jetsetters: b&k, fellow new yorkers

    August 31, 2011 /

Today’s jetsetters are B&K, fellow New Yorkers. Say hello to the romantic & hubs’s neighbors & general partners in crime. Though we were all on lockdown for the hurricane-that-wasn’t this weekend and perfectly content to sit inside and gorge ourselves for two days, they, like us, much prefer wining & dining. And by wining & dining, we mean gin & tonics and vodka martinis, extra dirty please. Favorite place you’ve been: K: Amsterdam B: Iceland  More importantly, favorite meal: K: A hot dog from Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur in Reykjavík, Iceland. Icelandic hot dogs are made mostly with lamb and pork,…

how to succeed in traveling without really trying.

    August 30, 2011 /

I love perfect days on vacation. I’ve had many. Blissful, sunny days strolling along the Seine. Days spent wandering through Italian streets, stuffing myself with pasta and gelato. Days driving through the Irish countryside with picture-perfect rolling hills scattered with sheep and castle ruins on the horizon. But what about the non-perfect days? What about the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad days? Like the day you’re in Barcelona and your purse is stolen and you’re out of cash? Or the day you’re totally lost and you get a ticket from a German police officer for breaking laws you didn’t…

    a perfect day in santorini

    August 29, 2011 /

Every trip has one: the day that, when you think back later about your entire trip, was the BEST day. It’s the day that becomes the quintessential summary of your experience. Sometimes it’s a jumble of all your favorite things from a span of days that you combine into a completely inaccurate representation of exactly what you did that day, and other times it’s the only day you can perfectly remember from start to finish. I’ve noticed that for me, these days usually involve three things: a complete surprise, something iconic, and a cute outfit. That last one sounds lame,…

WHAT is going on in New York City? How am I supposed to blog when Mayor Bloomberg is evacuating most of Manhattan?? Luckily, the Romantic and I live on the Upper East Side (or as the Hubs likes to say, “The Highlands of Manhattan”), so our neighborhood is out of the danger zone for flooding and storm surges. This means our apartments are quickly turning into hurricane shelters for all our less-fortunate downtown friends. So, travelers, I’m keeping this short today, but a few quick tips to survive this little storm: Shop til you drop. Make sure you get to…
